Briefing
UK: Theresa May delivers the annual lord mayor’s banquet speech, at the Guildhall, London.
Belgium: Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief negotiator, briefs the EU27 general affairs council on Brexit negotiations and the Irish border issue.
On this day
In 1912 a search party discovered the bodies of Captain Robert Scott (Scott of the Antarctic) and other members of his expedition, who had died returning from the South Pole; in 1944 RAF bomber aircraft sank the German battleship Tirpitz in Tromso fjord, Norway; in 1969 Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was expelled from the Soviet Writers’ Union for “antisocial behaviour”.
Nature notes
Even in mid-November, some of the summer flowers are still to be seen. One is feverfew, a small white daisy with very noticeable clusters of bright green, lacy leaves and the scent of camphor. Its name comes from its use as a febrifuge, a potion that relieves, or puts to flight, fever, and it was once commonly planted. Now it is often found at the edge of pavements beside garden gates, and is sometimes still used for migraines. A plant of grassy verges that draws attention to itself is hedgerow crane’s-bill, whose small flowers glow strangely brightly, with a kind of mauve neon light. Its seeds have a long, pointed beak. In older flower guides it is often called mountain crane’s-bill, although it seems to have no particular connection with mountains. A yellow buttercup that is still growing on some lawns is creeping buttercup. It spreads by pushing runners, or stolons, a long distance through the grass. These take root and send up new flowers and leaves, which can soon take over a large part of a lawn.
