waa evacuated, Raaecrana threw forward his force m
rapid pursuit, General Thomas moving on the Manchester
road from Manchester, and McCook on the road from
Tuilaboma. General Tbotnaa moved rapidly, In the hopes
of striking the enemy, morlng nearly due east to get ma

General Negley encountered ibe rear of Hardee at a point
about four miles north of Elk river, and skirmished wittj
It all day, losing four or five killed and wounded. Among
the prisoners waa Lieutenant I'iatt, of the Eleventh
Michigan.
The enemy 's res rguard , under Wheeler, made a stubborn
reelatance, delaying Gen. Negley so that the reb-1 trains
got beyond the river during the night of the 1st. This
same process on the part of General Buckner enabled
General Bragg, with the reserve artillery (tweutx si*
piece*), to cross Kik river at Efetell Springs on the eight of
the 1st, and to reach the mountains. The enemy on botl?
roads burned the bridges, and the rear guards took up
positions In hastily built works on the opposite lude of the
river. It was understood this was for the purpose of de
laying our crossing as long as possible, In order to enabl*
the lufantry and trains to got Into the mountains. To aid
tbem in this very heavy rains came up and the rtver rose
very high. The natives say they never saw the river so
high.
i he situation on the night of the 1st was : McCook at.
Estell Springs, with Kuckner opposite the forks; Thomas
at a point two-inileB up the river, with the enemy on ths
opposite bank, lhe main rebrl army was in the vicinity
of Winchester and Decberd, in camp, ready to move on

forced the enemy to take tho roads across the moun

at the mouth of Jtnck cieek, bolow the vnemv's posi

enemy, who withdraw to Winchester and the mountains.
At tho upper bridge, where Negley was posted, similar
mamuvring was made with little better suocea* M/mis

Negley opened with two battrrlos 1 u the enemy's posi

and killing several rebel gunners. They were taken
completely by surprise and'iuado but few replies, retreat
ing precipitately. Meantime Turchln bad engaged tbo
rebel right, and after a fight of two hours drovo it and
the entire rebel rorce from the field, killing thlrlyflve of
tbem.
The Ogbt only ended at two P.M. The troops were una bio

short distance, fft-gley encamping on the battle Held, and

to tbo foot of the mountain at Cowan , to And the enemy

We lost not over 1 ,100 men by casualties of all kinds.
Tho troops fullered much trom alternato beat and rain.
We have 1 ,500 to '.',000 prisoners, many of them deserters*
The enemy is entirely out of Tennessee, and our commu
