Laggy react native animations with network call

I am developing a swipe card animation using pan responder. I make a network call after a certain number of swipes for lazy loading of more cards. While the network call happens, the animation of the swipe starts to lag. Any help?

I call the loading of more cards from the render function of the view on certain conditions. Is it the correct way? or should I check the logic somewhere else?
