Sending up middle England: Coogan in Sky Atlantic’s ‘Welcome to the Places of My Life’
Comedy revisitations are difficult things. The memory of sacred classics can be tarnished if they get it wrong (Reggie Perrin) or can make you question the strength of the original material and wonder if it was any good in the first place (The Royle Family). So the return of failed chat-show host turned local DJ Alan Partridge after ten years away was always going to be treated with some trepidation.
But its star and creator Steve Coogan has done a very clever thing. By making an “authored” documentary in which Alan Partridge takes us on a tour of his beloved Norfolk (sponsored by the Norwich Council of Traders, no less), he can get away with a lack of polish. That’s not to say that this new Partridge offering isn’t any good. It’s just that it’s meant not to be any good.
Coogan has a keen eye for satire, and here he mocks those glossy, empty travelogues by celebrities with little passion for their subjects. You know the sort of thing: Tamzin Outhwaite on her love of Bolivian alpaca, Sandi Toksvig in search of the real Addis Ababa. To these, and the real ones being commissioned with alarming frequency, Welcome to the Places of My Life is a refreshing, low-grade reposte.
Clad in a nasty red car coat, humming the theme tune to Seventies cult kids' drama Follyfoot ("Round, round the lightning tree/It’s never too late for you and me"), Partridge is delighted to be authoring a road trip. With all the high-camp dramatic energy of David Starkey if he'd been told to sex it up for the ratings, Partridge takes us back to the darkest days in Norwich’s history when councillors fought over the imposition of night-time parking fees. Another segment sees Partridge visit the churchyard where his parents are buried, asking a befuddled (and possibly bogus) vicar: “If you could draw a soul, what would it look like?”
Much of the dialogue has that same precision which, in part, made Partridge such a critical hit in the Nineties. “Ross Kemp nailed it when he said I was equidistant between chit chat and analysis.” There’s also a laddishness in tone, a blokey shock value that will ensure certain lines get repeated in pubs and sixth-form common rooms. “The Black Death was very much the HIV of its day… It was airborne… Flying AIDS."
There is a problem with the show's format, though. Often, the brilliance of I’m Alan Partridge sprang from the sitcom format which meant that there were the same people for him to spar regularly with, to puncture his pomposity, to be amazed by his crass insensitivity.
This does happen occasionally in Welcome to the Places of My Life when Alan meets a mocking greengrocer or a former teacher (now on a mobility scooter), but the characters aren’t around long enough to make an impact. One short phone call towards the end of the show comes from Lynn, Partridge’s misused PA who, after all these years still seems faithful, though less tolerant of her boss's foibles. This silent cameo only serves as a reminder of how strong the supporting characters were in previous series.
There is also some sloppy editing (and that’s nothing to do with the faux documentary shtick). The scene in which Alan test drives a Range Rover goes on for far too long – rather like the B1113 between New Buckenham and Harford Bridge – and the idea of Partridge interacting with real people (as opposed to actors pretending to be real people) seems to have been abandoned halfway through.
But these are minor quibbles. This new show is evidence that Steve Coogan is still immersed completely in his most successful creation. Interestingly, he is now about the same age that Partridge was meant to be when he first introduced the character. In Coogan's dotage, he seems to have gained a touch of sympathy for the man once voted TV Quick magazine's Man of the Moment.
Egotistical, bombastic, bigoted, insecure, lonely, needy. Partridge remains a brilliant, monstrous, pathetic creation who can still raise a smile in his audience. If Partridge was once merely a figure of fun, he is now a character of true pathos, and Steve Coogan must take the credit for that.
