NY Mets call up catcher Robinson Cancel, designate Elmer Dessens for assigment

Noah K. Murray/The Star-LedgerThe Mets recalled catcher Robinson Cancel on Thursday to add depth, with Brian Schneider hobbled by a sore knee.


NEW YORK -- The Mets recalled catcher Robinson Cancel from Triple-A Buffalo before Thursday's doubleheader to add catching depth, with Brian Schneider bothered by what manager Jerry Manuel described as a sore knee.



To clear room for Cancel, the Mets designated reliever Elmer Dessens for assignment. Manuel said Omir Santos will start both games Thursday.

-- Luis Castillo was with his wife, who is expected to give birth Thursday, but could be back at the ballpark in time for the night game. Alex Cora started at second in the day game and Angel Berroa started at shortstop.



-- Manuel said Gary Sheffield will come off the DL when he is eligible to do so Sunday.



-- Jose Reyes was expected to run the bases Thursday in Port St. Lucie, Fla.



-- Billy Wagner will begin a rehab assignment Saturday with Class A St. Lucie.
