Middle School merging with associated High Schools[edit]

Note that Avilla R-13 School District is an elementary/middle school. Because it is a rural school district, it is associated with five different high schools, which makes merging with other schools impractical. The Avilla School is also of regional historical significance, and this information should be separate from other articles.--Traveler7 (talk) 18:19, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Assessment[edit]

I'm assessing this article following a request at WP:SCH/A. This school being called a school district is very confusing, although it seems to check-out okay. That said, if some high schools are associated with this district then they should be mentioned somewhere - perhaps with a link to their own articles along with summary here. Alternatively, the article could perhaps be split into an article about the school and the other about the school district itself. In any case, school's history justifies a mid-importance rating, with the current article quality allowing for C-class.

The history section as it stands is okay, although it either needs to be sourced better or rely on more than two sources. Also, the apparent random use of italics looks a bit strange - see WP:ITALICS. It is good to see some pictures in the article, although if more desired and can't be fitted in then a category for the school can be created on Commons with {{Commons category}} added to the article.

In general, the article needs expansion for B-class and ideas can be found at WP:WPSCH/AG#S; WP:WPSCH/AG#WNTI also covers what not to add. CT Cooper · talk 19:15, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the assessment on this article[edit]

I did not create this article, but it was one of the first ones that I edited when I started Wikipedia a few years ago. It is full of my newbie mistakes that I had not yet repaired, like all those italics! I guess I thought I was writing a textbook or something! I would like to do a good CE on this article in the future and add material when I can find the references, so we can make it a good example for the school project.

Everyone agrees with you about the Missouri school district system being confusing ;-) They do have a rather complex system (that is not explained completely in the article Education in Missouri either.) Most Missouri school districts are systems that are composed of many schools, of course. But in some areas with low populations, a school can be the only one in it's own district. In these cases (like Avilla R-13 School District) the school assumes the district title as it's official school name. There is a lot more to it but that is the nutshell version. I posted the first message because I had read that Wikipedia doesn't normally do articles on elementary or middle schools, as they are merged as part of their associated high schools. I was wondering what to do in these situations like Avilla, who are their own district and sends their students to multiple other districts for high school.

Thanks again for your help with this.Traveler7 (talk) 22:36, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Okay, I understand now. I was going to suggest adding a clarifying sentence saying it was the only school in the district, but I see you have already done that. You are right that Wikipedia does not normally retain articles which only cover elementary/middle schools, with the normal rule being that such articles get merged into their school district. However, there isn't any clear precedent on what to do if the school district contains a single school that is below secondary level. In this instance, I would have thought the point would be mute since the schools history ought to push it over the threshold of passing WP:N. A good selection of sources is already given in the article, and if they can be further expanded then this article can go along way.

Best of luck! CT Cooper · talk 19:13, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
